Asan Tol begins where Thamel ends, but the two feel worlds apart. Thamel looks to tourism and the modern world; Asan is one of the most traditional and surprising corners of the capital.
In a maze of narrow lanes, fruit, vegetables and spices are laid out on the ground or sold from tiny shops under the arches. Incense drifts from shrines at every corner. Come early in the morning as the market wakes up, or at the end of the day when things calm down.
