Bungamati is an old village in a beautiful setting, surrounded by terraced rice fields, only a few kilometres from the capital, yet rarely visited.
Traditional life goes on here: house fronts hung with drying chillies, narrow lanes lined with wood-carving workshops, and a lively central square with the temple of Rato Machhindranath, the red god of rain and harvest. Together with neighbouring Khokana it makes a half-day of authentic village life.
Walks we suggest
Bungamati to Khokana on foot
Khokana is about twenty minutes from Bungamati along a path through the rice fields, then a small flat road that leads quietly to the old village and its mustard-oil mill.
